In the Book of Jonah, "When the people of Nineveh believed God, they proclaimed a fast and all of them, great and small, put on sackcloth."
"The King of Nineveh ...covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in the ashes."
For us also, the ashes are a sign of penance.
The morning mass was well attended, despite a downpour.
