A Call To Vocations
Rev. Gary M. Dailey
Vocations Director, Diocese of Springfield
Homily at St. Cecilia Church, Wilbraham, MA

Fr. Dailey quoted the last letter from Pope John Paul about the strong attraction in young people to the values of the spirit and their desire for holiness.
He spoke about the need for priests. In our diocese, 1994 to 2004, 17 new priests were added, but about 85 were lost through death and retirement.

Fr. Dailey believes that God is still calling men and women to religious life, but young people are not responding. Opinions of peers and family lack of support for vocations are probable impediments.
As families and as a parish community, we can help them to courageously make a decision to respond to God's call.

A diocesan priest is called to serve the people of God. He fulfills the mission of the Church through liturgical and sacramental celebrations, preaching the Good News, teaching and upholding the faith of the Church.

A priest takes on the roles of administrator, counselor, teacher, and collaborator. The most vital role of priesthood is spiritual and sacramental leadership. In his ministry a priest promotes the spiritual, emotional and physical well being of the people.
